Commander’s Corner – Summer 2014

Thank you for the confidence you have placed in me as your incoming commander. I earned my eligibility with the 4th Infantry Division during combat operations in Pleiku and Dak To RVN in 1966 and 1967.

My affiliation with the VFW began in 1994.The phrase “Honor the Dead by Helping the Living” is a mandate and a way of life for me. It has been my honor to serve as VFW Post 7588 Commander.  In my offices and appointments at post, district and department levels, the driving force is always service to my fellow veterans and their families.

To Immediate Past Post Commander Jim “Doc” Nealand, thank you for your service and dedication to our organization. We all owe you a debt of gratitude. Thank you to all post and auxiliary members and friends of the post who helped make our Memorial Day Poppy Drive a successful and record setting one.

Membership recruiting is an important part of our scheduled activities as we begin the new VFW year. We will be recruiting at the Carl T. Hayden VAMC on the first Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of each month from 8:00 am until 2:00 pm beginning on July 1, 2014 and continuing through the end of the year. Copies of signup sheets will be distributed at the regular post meetings. Join me if you are able to – it will be appreciated.

Summer is quite busy but there is time for work and play. Our post meetings are on the second Tuesday of each month. You can help shape the future of our post and be part of the important work that we do. Join us at our Post Auxiliary Dinners on the second Friday each month and enjoy an evening out with friends and family. Our 9-ball pool league meets every Thursday evening at the post lounge starting at 7:00 pm. All post and auxiliary members are invited to join the Cooties and Cuties for their Dog Races. It is a fun time for all involved. Your commander will send an email in advance.

The VFW Department of Arizona Convention is at Fort McDowell from the 4th through the 7th of June. There will be a 4th District Planning Meeting on the 14th of June. Your commander will send out an email to post and auxiliary members regarding the time and place. Don’t forget the Father’s Day breakfast at the post on June 15th from 10 am to noon.

The VFW National Convention will begin on July 19th and end on July 23rd. Your post commander will attend both state and national conventions, represent the post as a delegate and report on each event.

The National C-I-C’s Homecoming is in Reno, Nevada from the 14th through the 16th. Post 9400 will host a Dental Fair for Veterans from the 29th  –  31st of August. This is an excellent opportunity to do some recruiting. Your Commander will be attending the Department Commander’s Homecoming at Show Low on the 29th and 30th of August.

We have a great group of post and auxiliary members who do so much. To each of you thank you and keep on doing what you do for our vets and their families. One of my goals is timely communication by email with all post and auxiliary members so we can all have a chance to be part of our present and future activities.

Yours in Comradeship
Chris Kanios – Commander
VFW Post 9400
